The name Wiesbaden translates to 'meadow baths', and it is so-called in because of its combination of extensive parkland and the many thermal baths found throughout the city. Wiesbaden is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, with 14 hot springs still flowing in the city.
In the 19th century Wiesbaden became famous for gambling, and is cited as the inspiration for Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky's famous masterpiece, The Gambler.
Wiesbaden is also notable as the home of the European headquarters of the US Army, meaning that the city plays host to approximately 19,000 American citizens.
