Language Study Holiday in Biarritz for teenagers from 13 to 14 years old and young adults from 15 to 17 year old
Biarritz is one of the oldest surf spots in France: when American surfers arrived at the end of the fifties, they were immediately amazed by the qualities of the waves and by the beauty of these beaches. Since then, surfing has become a part of the local culture, along with rugby, gastronomy, and the Basque pelota.
Our partner school is located only 10 minutes away from the beach, yet also very close to the city center. This historical building, with a terrace, 10 classrooms, and a large garden with a private swimming pool, welcomes students worldwide. Here everyone can learn French in a very cozy and motivating atmosphere, with qualified and experienced teachers, who teach, among other things, the vocabulary related to surfing.
Four times a week, in the morning or the afternoon (depending on the tide), you'll go to the surf school at the "Plage de la Milady" (Milady's beach) to practice with a professional instructor in groups of 8 participants maximum. But you'll also have time to discover the city and its surroundings (Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz…) and to have fun with other participants.
We offer 2 programs:
1. TEENAGERS from 13-14 years old with the residence accommodation
2. YOUNG ADULTS from 15-17 years old with the host family accommodation

French classes
20 lessons per week (15 hours in total), from Monday to Friday, in groups of 8 students maximum.
Surf lessons.
A swim test will be held at the beginning of the stay. All participants in the junior program in Biarritz must know how to swim.Surf lessons will be held 4 times a week for 1h30. Schedules may vary depending on the tides and weather conditions. In case of bad conditions that would make surfing impossible, canceled sessions will be postponed by the provider or replaced by sport activities.
During the surf lessons, the young students will be divided into groups of 8 maximum with a surf instructor graduated from a State Patent of surfing instructor or a BPJEPS mention: surf (Professional Certificate of the Youth, of the Popular Education and Sport).
The teachers will address a theme on this sport during class time to facilitate the understanding of surf lessons and to address local sporting events.
The practice of surfing will allow juniors to communicate and exchange on a common interest and share in French and will participate in group dynamics, cohesion and solidarity.Accommodation
By a host family, on a full-board basis, double room. Staying with a host family is a unique intercultural experience that we highly recommend to all our students. You will share unique moments of daily life with your family, practicing your French in real situations.
All our host families are carefully selected by our team and live maximum 20 minutes by public transport from the school. The public transportation card is not included in the price.Each family hosts one or more students with a different mother tongue, in a twin bedroom.
Breakfasts and dinners will be taken with the host families. Packed lunches will be provided for outdoor lunches.
The minimum stay here is at least 1 week.
Social program
The Junior Program has a program of activities in addition to the sport sessions:– A convenient city tour on the Monday of arrival for new students
– One cultural visit per week (half-day excursion on Wednesday afternoon and / or a full day on Saturday in Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz, Hendaye)
– Social and cultural activities : 2 events per week, on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday, to allow students to practice French together (football tournaments,beach volley competitions, quizzes, photo competitions, treasure hunts …).
– The Friday evening is organized by International House Biarritz to promote exchanges between students. The other evenings are free, within the host family for total immersion

Transfers
Transfers are included from Biarritz Airport or train station. A member of the International House Biarritz team or a member of the family will pick up the student on arrival and accompany them on the day of departure. Full-board accommodation in host families (from 15 to 17 years old)
Staying with a host family is a unique intercultural experience that we highly recommend to all our students. You will share unique moments of daily life with your family, practicing your French in real situations.
All our host families are carefully selected by our team and live a maximum of 30 minutes by public transport from the school. Each family hosts one or more students with a different mother tongue, in a twin bedroom. The minimum stay is at least one week.
Breakfasts and dinners will be taken with the host families. Packed lunches will be provided for outdoor lunches.
Please note that participants go to the school and back by local transportation: the bus pass costs around 12 € per week and must be purchased on the spot.
Participants aged 15 and more might be allowed to go out on certain evenings (until 11pm), only if their parents sign an authorization before their arrival. Teenagers younger than 15 are not allowed to go out in the evening without the company of a member of the school's team.
The surf lessons are scheduled according to the tide....
A swim test will be organized on the first day at 8.30 am at beach “Port Vieux”. All students must know how to swim to register for our Junior programme as it includes water activities.
Surf lessons will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in the afternoon. Each session will last 1h30 and the timetable will vary depending on the tides and general weather conditions. If a surf session is cancelled due to weather conditions, our surf school will reschedule it. During the surf lessons, students will be divided into groups of eight maximum with a surf instructor holding a State Certificate or BPJEPS with surf specialization (Brevet Professionnel de la Jeunesse, de l’Education Populaire et du Sport).
Teachers will discuss a surf-related topic during class to facilitate the understanding of the surf lessons and to discuss local sporting events. Surfing will allow students of different nationalities to communicate and share a common interest in French, and will encourage group dynamics, cohesion and solidarity.
The Junior programme includes free weekly activities for the participants.
The activities included will be:
- A city-tour on Mondays for new students
- One half-day cultural excursion per week (Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz and Hendaye)
- Every afternoon: sports, social, recreational and cultural activities
- One full-day excursion on Saturday
